Shell-and-tube heat exchangers are the most widespread devices. They are used for heat exchange and thermochemical processes between various liquids, vapours and gases – with and without a change in their aggregative state.

Shell-and-tube heat exchangers have become the most widely used type of apparatus. This is due, above all, to their reliable construction, a large set of execution options for different operating conditions, in particular:

  • single-phase flows, boiling and condensation in hot and cold sides of the heat exchanger with vertical or horizontal execution;
  • pressure range from vacuum to high values;
  • widely varying pressure drops on both sides due to wide variety of options;
  • meeting the thermal stresses requirements without significantly increasing the cost of the device;
  • sizes from small to very large (5000 m²);
  • possibility to use different materials in accordance with the cost, corrosion, temperature and pressure requirements;
  • use of advanced heat transfer surfaces inside and outside the pipe, various enhancers, etc.;
  • possible extraction of the tube bank for cleaning and repair.
